Chapter Eleven
The next morning, Dillon leaned against one of his parentsâ houseâs four columns. He and Dan were waiting for Craig, who had left them an urgent message on their answering machines to meet.
âWhat do you think is so urgent?â Dan asked.
âNo idea, but my interview with Mary begins after breakfast. So whatever it is, he better get here quick and let us know.â He planned on taking her to the old Wilde Mine for a picnic. Afterward, back to his house for dinner. He hadnât been able to get her out of his mind. There was no longer any doubt in him that she was the one.
Craig drove up in his truck. âHey, guys.â
He stepped up to his brother. âHow was the interview with Mary?â
âThatâs what I want to talk about.â Craigâs entire demeanor was serious. âMary hasnât had an easy life. Her relationship with her parents isnât close. She told me things about her childhood that broke my heart.â
Danâs eyes narrowed. âWere they abusive?â
âNot physically, but definitely emotionally.â Craig shook his head. âBut her fiancé did abuse her. She has bruises on her arms.â
âFuck. I saw one of them that first day,â Dan said. âShe obviously didnât want to go into it at the time with me.â
Dillon curled his fingers into fists by his side. âIs the asshole still in the picture?â
âSheâs here in Wilde because she left her old life behind. Sheâs looking to start fresh, but that doesnât mean sheâs not skittish. Iâm not sure what to do, guys. She says sheâs only staying for a few more days.â
âMom told me that you brought her back late,â Dan said.
âWhen she told me about her parents, I was holding her, trying to comfort her. One thing led to another. And we made love. She is definitely the woman we should spend our lives with. Iâve never cared for anyone more in my life.â
Dillon had never heard Craig speak like this about anyone before. It was crystal clear that his brother was head over heels in love with Mary. Even with the little time heâd spent with her, he understood why. His own feelings for her were growing like wild flowers.
âShe also told me sheâs not ready to start dating,â Craig said.
âWe canât lose her, but how can we fix this?â Dan said, obviously falling for Mary as quickly as he and Craig. âDillon, you always know how to make things work even when it looks impossible. What do you think we need to do?â
âWe have got to keep her here longer. The only way we can do that is to drag out her interviews with the family.â
âThatâs a great idea,â Dan said. âCraig, did she finish interviewing you?â
âShe did, but I think I could come up with some new stuff that might pique her curiosity.â Craig grinned. âI bet she would love hearing about the time the three of us got trapped in the mine.â
âWe were only kids,â Dan said. âBut I bet youâre right. You could keep her talking on that story alone for at least a half a day.
